Wal-Mart's Marketside outpaces Tesco's Fresh & Easy.

Early last October, four small and warmly lit grocery stores opened their doors  near Phoenix and, with fresh-baked bread and piles of regional produce,  launched their long-anticipated attack on the British.

That’s how many industry observers, at least, described Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s opening of its small-format grocery, Marketside, almost a  year after its U.K. competitor, Tesco plc, landed its own chain of half-pint markets on U.S. soil.
