Efforts to do right by the environment are putting some retailers out of business.
Looking out for the environment certainly seems like a nice enough undertaking. But the timing of the deadlines for meeting costly state-mandated environmental standards couldn’t be worse.
Already contending with national concerns about economic pressures on sales, credit-card interchange fees, lower gas margins, the inability to obtain credit and the costs of complying with payment-card industry data-security standards, many retailers are succumbing to additional state-level pressure—and closing their fuel pumps for good.
