If you listen to the tobacco naysayers preach about the category’s systemic decline, you might be inclined to empty your backbar and replace it with novelty and other impulse items.

Don’t be fooled. Truth is, tobacco sales in the United States are roughly equivalent to the baseline general fund revenues projected in California for 2012-2013.

“Tobacco is about a $90-billion business that drives very frequent trips,” said Bloom, president and COO of Family Dollar, during a conference call with analysts.
