Only a few words into her acceptance speech, teenage country-music star Taylor Swift got a disturbing life lesson when hip-hop artist Kanye West sprung onto the stage, swiped the microphone and made a fool of himself during MTV’s Video Music Awards.

In the nation’s capital, in the halls of Congress, President Barack Obama was delivering a serious speech about health-care reform when U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson blurted out, “You lie.” The disruption before both Houses caused a chorus of boos and incredulity.

Yes, both Kanye West and Joe Wilson later apologized. And one might argue that the two incidents are quite different and should not be lumped together. But they should, in at least one respect.
