Murphy Oil Corp. owns convenience and fuel retailers Murphy USA and Murphy Express. In 2012, Murphy Oil announced plans to spin off Murphy USA into a downstream subsidiary called Murphy USA Inc., which operates independently of the parent company and is separately traded. The spinoff was formally approved by the board of directors in August 2013.

Murphy USA is widely known for its high-volume, low-cost operations at the Murphy USA kiosks. Its network is dominated by the smaller formats, which are located on Walmart lots. These kiosks are positioned in the marketplace as a destination for fuel and cigarettes, offering competitive pricing and speed of service. It is the market leader in those categories. The new, larger-format Murphy Express stores, which are located near, but not on, Walmart lots, have this same philosophy but a broader product offer. The stores offer hot, fresh coffee; fountain and frozen drinks; free ATMs; beer; and many other convenience items.

At the end of the 2012, the company announced plans to open 200 more sites on Walmart lots in the Midwest and Southeast. The sites are expected to be built in the next three years; more than half will be small kiosk locations, and the rest will be 1,200-square-foot stores. It also announced plans to build 40 new Murphy Express locations.
