This Midwestern supermarket chain is also pretty good at the convenience store business, parlaying its popular brand through a strong private-label fuel program and, inside the store, with a 20-foot grocery section as an ideal fill-in between those runs to the grocery.

The company plans to add 14 more gas station sites in 2014. It opened its first Hy-Vee Gas store in 1997 in Davenport, Iowa, branching into a second retail channel to further its overall market share and enhance its brand convenience to consumers.

Competing on the c-store side against such stalwarts as Casey’s General Stores and Kum & Go, Hy-Vee Gas seeks to differentiate itself through a strong private-label offering, including prepared foods and self-distribution that helps control costs.

The company also runs a robust loyalty program at the pump called Hy-Vee Fuel Saver, a card that, according to the company, can save motorists up to $2 per gallon on gas.
