Gilbarco retail tech conference brings four providers together
DURHAM, N.C. -- Bringing mobile discussion points to the table, four emerging "mobile wallet" providers gave their views at a pump-supplier technology conference this week. Gilbarco Veeder-Root brought together four mobile payment providers together to speak at a panel discussion. They included representatives from Isis, PayPal, MCX and National Payment Card.
"The panel discussed consumer buying behavior and the ubiquity of mobile phones, as well as the projected drivers of wide scale mobile payment adoption," Lucy Sackett, spokesperson for Greensboro, N.C.-based Gilbarco Veeder-Root said.
The key points:
- PayPal's value proposition, outlined by Matt Riley, includes the ease with which the retailers can transfer their private-label apps to the PayPal app for ease of consumer implementation. San Jose, Calif.-based PayPal is an Internet payment provider that's branching out into mobile wallets.
- The merchant value proposition was a key area of focus for Peter Guidi of National Payment Card Association. He said merchants must get a reduction in swipe fees, an increase in sales and an affordable way to reward loyal customers in their mobile payment solution. National Payment Card, Coconut Creek, Fla., processes payments and helps retailers use automated clearinghouse options to help lower transaction fees.
- MCX's Dodd Roberts cited as well the requirement of a superior customer experience and merchant ownership of the data resulting from these transactions as critical to the ultimate success. MCX stands for Merchant Customer Exchange and is backed by major retailers including Bentonville, Ark.-based Walmart.
- Doug Kilgour of Isis rounded out the panel with an entreaty to the retailers to engage in mobile, noting, "If you haven't done anything yet, you're already late." Austin, Texas-based Isis was founded by three major phone carriers.
