Replacement location will include larger building, gasoline pumps

FOLSOM, Pa. -- Just a couple months after celebrating its—and thus the company’s—50th anniversary, Wawa Inc. will close its first store soon to make way for a new, larger building, according to multiple reports.
The first Wawa store opened for business in 1964 in Folsom, Pa. It will be closed to make way for a new one just up the road.
The store figured into celebrations this past April when the privately owned company marked its 50th anniversary. That original store will remain open until the doors open to a new, larger Wawa, planned for a third of a mile up, according to a CBS report.
Wawa leases the current site and doesn’t know what the owners’ plans are for the building that housed the first Wawa store, since 1964.
Construction is expected to begin next year on the new store, which will acquire the “Store No. 1″ designation when it opens, now set for the spring of 2016. At that time, the company said, the same Wawa associates will serve at the new store, which will also sell gasoline.
Wawa owns and operates more than 600 convenience stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Florida. More than 20 new Wawas will open this year.
