WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. -- At a time when some companies may be looking to cut back on the benefits they offer to their employees, QuickChek Corp. said that it is continuing its commitment to its own employees.

A market leader in foodservice in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area with a well-known fresh coffee and fresh-food program, the Whitehouse Station, N.J.-based convenience store chain continues to grow, opening 25 new stores and hiring an additional 1,100 people since 2007 while offering its full-time employees a variety of affordable health and welfare benefits. These range from medical, dental and vision to life insurance, a 401(k) savings plan, fitness center reimbursement and pet insurance.

"We are committed to being a great place to work, a great place to shop and a great place to invest," said QuickChek CEO Dean Durling, whose company refers to its more than 3,500 employees as "team members." "And part of that investment is to have a wellness strategy to achieve a healthy workforce."

This includes a "Fit for Life" wellness program that provides the opportunities for team members to learn about their current health status through metabolic screenings, a health risk assessment, and getting an annual physical. In return, qualified team members receive a discount on their medical plan costs.

There are discounts on fruits and salads to encourage healthy eating while at work, which fits in with the company's "Fresh Convenience" branding.

Additional benefits that assist in having a healthy workforce include free flu shots for all team members.

As part of QuickChek's team approach, it offers these benefits throughout the company. Full-time team members may also be entitled to spousal coverage.

With 137 retail locations throughout New Jersey and southern New York, QuickChek has been named one of the Best Places to Work in New Jersey for four consecutive years and in New York State for 2013. These honors recognize the states' top employers who show a dedication to their employees' growth and quality of life.

The company said that every district leader started with QuickChek in another capacity and has been promoted from within. In its 46-year history, the company has never laid off an employee due to economic reasons. Privately held, QuickChek offers year-end profit-sharing and recently honored 165 team members at its annual Total Customer Dedication Awards Weekend last month, including 13 people who marked 25 years of service with the company this year.
