ANKENY, Iowa -- Seven oil companies and convenience store retailers were named to the Forbes Platinum 400, an exclusive list of the best big companies in America released late last month.
Industry-related companies named to the list include:
Casey's General Store (No. 230), Ankeny, Iowa ConocoPhillips (No. 213), Houston Marathon Oil (No. 190), Houston Murphy Oil (No. 101), El Dorado, Ark. Sunoco (No. 36), Philadelphia Tesoro (No. 42), San Antonio Valero Energy (No. 38), San Antonio
In six of the past seven years, the companies [image-nocss] on the list outperformed the stock market over the following 12 months. The Platinum 400 had its best 12-month run in 2003, when it gained an average 26% vs. 13% from the S&P 500 and 10% for the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
In choosing the companies named to the list, Forbes requires revenue of at least $1 billion. The magazine editors also screen out companies with stock prices under $5 per share or with negative book value. Forbes statisticians then disqualify companies from Platinum 400 consideration if they have been public for less than two years.
Finally, Forbes ranks candidate companies for financial performance against their industry peers in one of 26 industry groups over the latest five years and most recent 12 months. The ranking items include sales and earnings growth, stock market returns and debt to total capital.
