Garb-Ko exec receives Hedy Halpert Award for diversity

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Network of Executive Women (NEW) has awarded its 2005 Hedy Halpert Diversity Awareness Award to Daniel Abraham, president and CEO of convenience store operator Garb-Ko Inc., and past president of the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS).
Abraham (pictured, from company website) was recognized for being an ardent supporter of women in the convenience retailing channel. The outgoing NEW board member received his award in front of hundreds of industry executives August 9 at the Outlook Leadership Summit in Salt Lake City.[image-nocss]
Presenting the award were NEW President-Elect Jennie Jones, vice president, marketing of S&D Coffee, and Elizabethe Bogart, NEW's secretary and NACS vice president of industry affairs.
Abraham has been president and CEO of 7-Eleven operator Garb-Ko since his family acquired the firm in 1983. He is active in community and industry affairs board member of various professional organizations. He is an active supporter of women in the industry. He established a Women's Forum within his own company to provide mentoring and other resources.
According to his award nomination, His commitment to excellence and diversity is evident in his zeal to recruit, retain and promote women in his organization.
The Hedy Halpert Diversity Awareness Award was created to honor the late Hedy Halpert, a founding member of NEW. The first Halpert Award was presented in 2002 to Jim Keyes, CEO of 7-Eleven. In 2003, the award recognized Michele Hanson, vice president of First Data Corp. and a NEW founder and board member. Last year it was awarded to Dave Onorato, vice president of national convenience store sales for The Hershey Co.
The mission of the Network of Executive Women, Consumer Products and Retail Industry (NEW), is to attract, retain and advance women in the retail and consumer packaged goods industries through education, leadership and business development. The organization has more than 1,500 members and more than 30 corporate sponsors. Activities include a National Leadership Summit, mentoring programs and regional networking events across the country.
