ALTOONA, Pa. -- Community nonprofit group the Pennsylvania Downtown Center honored convenience store entrepreneurs and philanthropists Steve and Nancy Sheetz, along with Penn State Altoona, with a Townie Award at a banquet held June 2 at the Blair County Convention Center.
The Townies is an annual event in which communities from across Pennsylvania are recognized for noteworthy revitalization projects or events throughout the year. The group gives the Organizational Development: Community Partnerships award to recognize organizations that have reached out and forged innovative and mutually beneficial relationships with other downtown or neighborhood organizations, specifically those that have a vested interest in downtown or neighborhood revitalization.
It recognized Steve and Nancy Sheetz and the college for their joint efforts in contributing to the revitalization of downtown Altoona, Pa., including the Sheetz Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence, established in 2009.
Steve and Nancy Sheetz and Chancellor and Dean Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry accepted the award.
Pennsylvania Downtown Center is the only statewide nonprofit dedicated solely to the revitalization of the commonwealth's core communities. Primarily through use of the National Main Street Center's Four-Point Approach, it provides outreach, technical assistance and educational services to assist communities in revitalizing their central business districts and surrounding residential neighborhoods. It has formed a variety of strategic partnerships with local and statewide organizations to further the mission of promoting community revitalization and reinvestment. And its centralized Harrisburg location allows it to interact regularly with members of the state legislature to advocate on behalf of downtown and neighborhood initiatives.
Altoona-based Sheetz Inc. operates approximately 470 locations throughout Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and West Virginia.
