PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- Irving Oil said it is making a $100,000 donation to the American Red Cross for the Katrina Relief Effort. The company is also assisting New Englanders who wish to donate locally by placing Red Cross collection boxes in the company's retail sites.

Donations are now being accepted on behalf of the Red Cross at all Irving Bluecanoe and Mainway stores in New England. The funds are being donated to the Great Bay Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Our thoughts are with everyone who is being affected by the hurricane [image-nocss] disaster, said Harry Hadiaris, director of Irving's convenience retail operations. All of us at Irving are saddened by this disaster, and many of our customers have expressed a desire to help in some way. With our wide distribution network of stores, we're pleased to offer another way people can make a contribution and help those most affected by the disaster.

Donations can be made at more than 125 locations throughout Irving's Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts network until September 30.

Portsmouth, N.H.-based Irving Oil is a regional refining and marketing company servicing customers in New England and Eastern Canada.

Meanwhile, in response to the escalating need for aid and assistance for victims of Hurricane Katrina, the BP Foundation, Warrenville, Ill., has increased its contribution to relief efforts to a total of $10 million. This builds on the $5 million commitment to hurricane relief announced by the Foundation last week.

The donation includes $2 million to Red Cross; $1.5 million to Houston-area hurricane relief programs; $2 million for matching contributions to Red Cross from employees, dealers and jobbers; $4 million to local community efforts in impacted communities; and diesel fuel donations in Louisiana and Mississippi.

BP said it has more than 1,000 employees who live and work in the Gulf Coast states affected by the hurricane. BP has established a 24-hour hotline at 1-866-850- 7768 to assist those employees in urgent need of assistance. The company has also established a program to provide displaced employees with financial aid for housing and food and other essential needs.
