CHICAGO -- Despite the ever-greater availability, quality and variety of retailers' offerings, consumers' purchases of prepared ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat foods from supermarkets and other retailers seem to be slumping, according to Technomic Inc.'s latest American Express MarketBriefing.
Almost a third (32%) report that they pick up prepared foods at retailers less than once every three months, compared to a quarter of those polled in May 2012. Only 22% buy such items weekly or more often, compared to 28% in the previous poll. A May 2011 poll also showed more consumers using meal solutions weekly or several times a month.
