Ads coincide with expanded New York City smoking ban
NEW YORK -- With an expanded smoking ban going into effect today in New York City, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. is launching an advertising campaign for Camel Snus. Print ads will be appearing this week in major daily newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal and USA Today.One ad says, "NYC smokers rise above the ban. Smokers, switch to smoke-free Camel Snus and reclaim the world's greatest city.""R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.'s Camel brand wants to make adult smokers in the city aware of a smoke-free tobacco product that's available to them--Camel Snus," company [image-nocss] spokesperson David Howard said in an email provided to CSP Daily News. "As trends in tobacco use change, Camel is transforming by offering adult smokers options, like smoke-free Camel Snus, to consider switching to."
Mayor Michael Bloomberg in February signed into law a bill amends the Smoke Free Air Act to prohibit smoking in the city's parks, beaches, boardwalks and pedestrian plazas. It prohibits smoking in all New York City parks except median strips, beaches and boardwalks, public golf courses, sports stadium grounds and pedestrian plazas such as those at Times Square and Herald Square.
Smoking will be allowed on sidewalks outside parks, including sidewalks that form the perimeter of parks. Violators of the new law could receive a $50 ticket.
