Burger King introduces new sandwich to rival McDonald's signature burger
MIAMI -- Burger King Worldwide Inc. has added the new Big King sandwich to its menu. The new sandwich features two fire-grilled beef patties, lettuce, onions and signature King Sauce on a three-layer warm, toasted, sesame seed bun.
"What makes the new Big King different than any other burger on the market is the unique fire-grilling that Burger King has been known for, for almost 60 years," said Eric Hirschhorn, the Miami-based fast feeder's chief marketing officer for North America. "With our flavorful, signature King Sauce and the fulfilling bite of two savory fire-grilled patties layered between three toasted buns, the Big King delivers a stacked burger experience that we know everyone loves."
The Big King is now available in Burger King restaurants nationwide for $3.69.
Burger King rolled out a version of the Big King in limited markets in 1997, according to a USA Today report. That version, which did not go national, did not have a middle bun, which the current version does, making the new Big King look more like McDonald's Big Mac.
McDonald's executives declined to specifically comment on the new competition. "We're focused on our business and our customers," spokesperson Lisa McComb told the newspaper.
Founded in 1954, Burger King is the second largest fast-food hamburger chain in the world. The system operates in more than 13,000 locations serving more than 11 million customers daily in 91 countries and territories worldwide. Approximately 99% of Burger King restaurants are owned and operated by independent franchisees, many of them family-owned operations that have been in business for decades.
