OAK BROOK, Ill. -- Cousin’s latches on to a new flavor trend, Burger King continues delivery-service growth, and more top news from the restaurant industry’s heavy hitters.
Burger King is extending its delivery service test to Florida, according to the Miami New Times. The burger behemoth has been testing delivery service in Maryland, Virginia and New York since the beginning of the year, with plans to launch it system-wide in summer 2013. Cousins Subs is tapping into what it’s targeted as one of the top 10 food trends of the year: pretzel bread. Two new menu additions feature the specialty bread and will be available through the end of the year. The Twisted Ham & Cheddar is served warm with bistro sauce, lettuce, onions and tomatoes with a package of crushed red peppers on the side. The Twisted Turkey & Roast Beef features brown mustard, mayonnaise, lettuce, onions and tomatoes.
McDonald’s launched a Cheddar Bacon Onion sandwich in select markets for a limited time. The sandwich, available with chicken breast or Angus beef, is topped with grilled onions, white Cheddar, hickory smoked bacon and creamy mustard sauce.
In an attempt to spice up an often-overlooked menu category, Sonic introduced two new chicken sandwiches. The Asiago Caesar Chicken Sandwich features grilled or crispy chicken breast topped with sliced Asiago cheese, tomatoes and Caesar dressing on a warm ciabatta bun. The Classic Chicken Sandwich meanwhile is topped with lettuce, tomatoes and light mayo on a warm whole-grain bun. The chain is touting the Classic Chicken Sandwich for having just 450 calories.
Jack in the Box restaurants added Chili Cheese Curly Fries to the menu at participating restaurants. Jack’s Chili Cheese Curly Fries feature the chain’s seasoned curly fries smothered with beef chili and shredded Cheddar cheese.
Starbucks opened another outlet of its Evolution Fresh juice stores on San Francisco’s Filllmore Street. In addition to two stores in the Seattle area, the San Francisco location marks the third store opening for the company in less than a year. The stores offer juices made to order, a globally inspired food menu featuring organic, vegetarian and vegan options, plus bottled Evolution Fresh juices, packaged sandwiches, collard wraps, and snacks for customers on the go. According to the company, Evolution Fresh is one of the few major “juiceries” left in the industry that still cracks, peels, presses and squeezes its own raw fruits and vegetables. It then cold presses and squeezes the juices using a technology called High Pressure Processing (HPP) to capture more of the flavors, vitamins and nutrients of raw fruits and vegetables.
