More convenience retailers rolling out coffee in "K-cup" format
OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. -- More convenience retailers are rolling out coffee in the single-serve or "K-cup" format compatible with the proprietary Keuring brewing system. In fall 2013, Stewart's Shops, Sheetz and Cumberland Farms were among the chains that joined Wawa, which debuted its offering in late 2012, in selling ground coffee pods for the popular system.
"We are pleased to launch these convenient new single-serve coffee containers so our customers can enjoy Wawa's signature flavors in the comfort of their homes," Mendy Meriwether, category manager for Wawa, said when the company announced the line extension for its private-label blend.
The Wawa, Pa.-based chain, with approximately 600 stores, now offers the single-serve coffee in Original, Decaffeinated, Hazelnut and 100% Colombian varieties. A box of 12 cups is priced at $9.99.
"A tremendous amount of development has gone into ensuring the cup that customers brew at home is as perfect as the cup our customers buy at any Wawa location," added Meriwether. "We have seen an incredible amount of excitement from our customers … and we look forward to expanding our varieties to generate even more ways to simplify our customers' lives."
Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-based Stewart's Shops, with approximately 330 stores, recently rolled out its proprietary Stewart's coffee in new, single-serve cups, made for use in Keurig-brand coffee machines. Each box contains 12 cups of the retailer's House Blend, priced at $7.99.
Sheetz Inc., Altoona, Pa., recently started offering single-serve coffee in boxes of 12 for $5.99 in Original House Blend and Breakfast Blend varieties at its more than 460 stores.
And Framingham, Mass.-based Cumberland Farms Inc., with nearly 600 stores, recently added "K-cup" availability for its Farmhouse Blend coffee.
Waterbury, Vt.-based Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (GMCR) owns the Keuring brewing technology.
