"I think 2010 is going to be even more of a challenging year than 2009."
So says IRI senior executive Thom Blischok, in CSP's November Cover Story.
"We are seeing the emergence of a new conservative shopper who consumes 6% to 10% less than previous to this economic sea change," Blischok adds. "The shopper will clearly, without question, shop next year through the continued lens of affordability."
What are you doing then to maximize your store value? Where are the opportunities and which trends have peaked and lost their cache?
If ever there was an individual with a crystal ball, it is Blischok. He predicted a sustained recession more than two years ago when the economic faucet was just beginning to leak. He was among the first to urge c-stores to embrace private label as a point of differentiation and seek that balance between P.L. and major brands.
What message does he have for us for 2010? Where should we invest? What should we ignore? Is foodservice still the future? What about wellness?
