Ringing in More BellStores
Campbell Oil converting two Red Head sites in Millersburg, Ohio

MILLERSBURG, Ohio -- A gas station known for offering full service is on its way to becoming a BellStores location, reported The Daily Record. A Millersburg, Ohio, Red Head station will be replaced by a 1,680-square-foot BellStores convenience store, according to plans submitted to the Millersburg planning and zoning commission by Campbell Oil Co. Inc.

According to Holmes County Auditor's records cited by the newspaper, the land and business were purchased by Campbell Oil for $50,000 in April from B&W Leasing. Campbell Oil also purchased a Red Head station on state Route 39 for $550,000, and it, too, is being converted to a BellStores.

The Millersburg store will feature a coffee counter, merchandise area and refrigerated display section. The station's gas pumps will remain as they are, with renovations to the canopy.

Zoning inspector Nate Troyer told the paper that conversations with representatives of Massillon, Ohio-based Campbell Oil indicated "the full service will be phased out."

Campbell Oil has declined comment, said the report.

The new construction required a change in zoning for the block, from residential to highway commercial. "What you had there was the station was built long before the area was zoned," said attorney Dan Mathie, who assisted Campbell with the zoning request. "It's basically extending a business zone that's already there."

The new zoning allows residential properties to retain the residential zoning or use as highway commercial, added the report.

The state Route 39 Read Head has a SubExpress pizza and sub franchise that was scheduled to close Friday, said the report, citing a notice posted in the store.

Red Head is possibly the last full-serve gas station in Holmes and Wayne counties, the report said, although some small station owners offer assistance at pumps.
