Atlas Named Top Workplace for 2nd Year Company also dedicates playground across from HQ

TAYLOR, Mich. -- Atlas Oil Co. has once again been honored as a "Top Workplace" by The Detroit Free Press for 2009. This is the second straight year that this award has been conferred upon Atlas. "Atlas has big dreams and we understand that success is only possible when we have happy and productive team members," said Sam Simon, CEO of Atlas Oil. "Our customers and employees are always top priorities and we make sure that both are well cared for."
Atlas provides innovative training programs, professional development opportunities, and tuition reimbursement for its employees. One example of a training program developed by Atlas is the Atlas Seals. An acronym for Safe, Educated, Atlas Leaders, the Seals help train and teach new Atlas Team members the Atlas way of doing business.
"Our employees' quality and professionalism enable growth," said Mike Evans, executive vice president of business development. Atlas is one of a small class of Michigan businesses that is growing, it said. Inc. magazine recently named Atlas in its Inc. 5000 list. When sorted by revenue, Atlas is ranked in the top 20 for fastest-growing companies.
The 2009 Top Workplaces were chosen based on a survey conducted for the Free Press; responses were based on 32,363 employees from 173 employers throughout southeast Michigan.
In other company news, Atlas Oil and the City of Taylor, Mich., recently hosted a grand opening ceremony to celebrate the completed transition of a once empty field into a playground for the entire community. The company offered last spring to construct a park across the street from its home office. It is now called Atlas Park.
Sam Simon, CEO and owner of Atlas Oil, and Taylor Mayor Cameron G. Priebe gave speeches at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. "It completely brightens the community. The green space looks so much better than the run down buildings that were located there. The best thing so far is the sound of the children laughing as they play. There is no better sound to put a smile on your face" Simon said.
Other attendees included Taylor City Council members, third graders from Holland Elementary School and senior center guests and Atlas team members.
Lunch was served to the group, attendees made caramel apples; the fall-themed event was a great way to welcome the new Atlas Park to the community.
When asked why Atlas decided to develop a park, Simon responded, "I believe children are our future and many don't have a place to play and enjoy their childhood as they are growing up. We felt that developing a playground would provide some joy to the children in our community."
